Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away as a Carnival barker as a little girl and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a maid and server. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. It was not without problems. After landing a gig in New York as a model for a detective magazine, she was unable to get jobs in the stage. Then in NYC, she worked at a bar, as a check-in girl before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. She made ends meet by working as an usher during the day while at night performing with the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She studied drama at the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
